Will the map editor or engine support water?

Can we
-Adjust the "clearness of the water"?

-Choose the color?

-Choose the maps and the surfeace behavior of the water?

Reason why I'm asking is that I've got some interesting things in mind for the map editor.

Yes. The engine video has at least one shot with visible water. You can make the water look like whatever you want, as you'll have the same amount of power and flexibility that our own artists have.

Will there be evil dolphins with m82s on their backs that swim around and try to kill everyone, thus forcing both teams to fight for thier lives and work together?

I have one simple request. And that is to have SHARKS with frickin' LASER BEAMS attached to their heads!

It might be possible with the editor's current state, but I have no way of knowing if you could actually pull it off well, as there are no swimming or underwater parts to Alliance.

Maybe futuristic things where you get a suit and special weapons. And you're chased by these piranhas and you got a shotgun. That would be very very hard.

Well, I would really like to see swimming added. :D

Yeah, well, my orogianl plan was to actually have tunnels leading underwater.

For the sake of having it? It doesn't currently factor into the gameplay of Alliance, so it doesn't make sense to add the feature and not use it instead of taking the time to add a different, better feature or further refine the current features. Remember, in game development you CANNOT just add any feature that comes to mind just for the sake of having it, but rather you have to carefully pick and choose what you have time to add and refine.

That, should definitely be possible (I thought you'd be swimming underwater). If you'll effectively be on dry land, it shouldn't be too difficult to do with the editor.

My IQ keeps dropping the more I read of this thread.

In case you haven't noticed by now that Alliance is a realistic wartime first person shooter. IT IS NOT COUNTER-STRIKE, HALO, BF2, QUAKE, DOOM, UNREAL TOURNAMENT. If it is not of this world is will definately not be in the game or possible in the game. For the love of god plz quit wasting Sox's time by asking stupid questions. And yes an underwater city map is a stupid idea for this game. Might be fun in Quake or Halo or some other game like that.

Sorry I know these forums are for people interested in the game and to ask questions about the game. But c'mon guys use some common fricken sense and think/read before typing. I have seen Sox answer so many questions over and over again. This is why developers and publishers rarely frequent their own forums because of post like this.

/end_rant

I feel better now. Carry on.

But say there was a D-Day Normandy map. And you approached by foot in the water sometimes instead of ships, tanks or jeeps. Or any other case where assualt or defense it partly in water. It was just to get the answer faster.

Heh...

Well, I though it would be interesting to have swimming since many covert operations included swiming. I mean, it would be very intersting to swim up to an an enemy installation.. It owuld add more depth to the game and serve as a very intersting gameplay element..

But hey..

Yeah, this is oneof the things that I think today's game's really need. Water should serve as more than just a method of transportation.

Because you do not want to submerge any gun in water.

Actually, they don't. Scuba insertions are done by special forces units in specific situations. Swimming insertions, not really. I wouldn't recommend trying to take a swim with an M16 and a normal load of magazines, let alone also having the rest of the gear that you'd be carrying.

Take the D-Day example that's been thrown around, it wasn't intended to be a swimming insertion. The landing crafts were supposed to drop people off where they could at least stand on the bottom, if not already be on dry land. Swimming to shore while carrying all of the gear that soldiers have is VERY, VERY difficult. A lot of soldiers who ditched the landing craft before it got to shore had to get rid of most of their equipment so that they wouldn't drown.

This is beside the point though. Alliance does not have any levels where swimming factors into the gameplay. As such, there is no reason for us to currently take the time to code and debug the ability to swim, when we have no use for the feature and there are plenty of features that need to be worked on that are in fact important.
