SO, since my old collection is...gone :cry: :cry: :cry: I'm going to start again and have decided that a pistol is what I need first. My choices so far ARE Smith And Wesson M&P 9mm or .45, Springfield XDM 9mm or .45, or possibly a used SIG .357 sig if it's cheap enough. Price max is 600...if you have any additions feel free to let me know, but keep the pistols modern and now glocks..I don't like them for some reason lol.

probably about to be getting a 1911 .45 acp myself. A modern 'sporterized' model though, the price is right.

Dunno mate, this is also probably out of that price range, but I have always wanted a mk12 socom.
( One locally here is ~2300 CDN)

USP. USP. USP. Cleanest, smoothest, most accurate pistol I have ever fired. A USP in .45 is my ideal, followed by a good 1911.

I've fired pretty much everything else you guys mentioned, and hands down, USP (used if you need to to make your budget). I have never fired a USP that wasn't superbly accurate- in fact even range-rental USPs I've shot (that get beat to shit) have been the most accurate handguns I've ever fired. 1-2" groups at 15-20 yards accurate, if not better.

I would love to have a USP or a 1911 BUT I just can't afford to drop that kind of cash on a gun atm lol. My buddy bought an XD a few weeks ago (I steered him away from the glock he was looking at lol) and I love the XD, but I want something a little more. Starting doing research on the XDM and the M&P. XDM offers a match grade barrel etc and I'm already very familiar with the XD platform. I haven't shot the M&P yet but have heard some complaints about the trigger. It's looking like next week will be when I make the choice. I've found XDM's and M&P's below my price range at 2 different places that are both around 45 mins from me so looks like on my next day off I'll be paying a visit to both shops. If I can find a USP for $600 used and it's not beat to hell and back I'll pick it up in a heartbeat though lol.

I don't think you could really go wrong with a XD or a M&P. Go hold both and see what fits your hand. You could most likely also find some ranges near you that might rent them out. As for the M&P's trigger, a lot of people get an aftermarket sear by Apex that makes it better but I've never tried one with it myself.

For something hammer fired in that price range I've heard good things about Beretta's PX4.

Hmm yeah Asi, the USP is just the little sister of the MK 23 Socom. IIRC the Socom is designed to shoot 2 inch groups at 150 feet. ( yeah :shock: ).

Mk23 has a huge shortcoming, though. It's absolutely enormous. To the point that it's almost comical. You can't truly appreciate this until you've handled one.

A lot of forum postings discuss this, as it's impossible not to notice when you handle it. You just look at the thing and go, "why??" It's easily the size of a Desert Eagle .50, if not larger. All to shoot .45.

I don't think they're even using them anymore, as the P226 seems to be the sidearm of choice (at least that's what we Joe public hear).

I have a healthy love affair with the Mk23 like everyone else, but after handling one in person, I can say the USP is far and away my favorite sidearm to date. The Mk23 simply feels like a prop gag.

Well I can't really afford either of those so I'm just going to get the XDM lol. I really think I want it in 9mm because of the penetration of the round and hi mag capacity. I love .45, but as of right now 9mm is what I'm going with.

Still getting a mk23 when I have 2k burning a hole in my pocket.

In the mean time a mate wants to sell me his Norinco 1911 .45 acp sport model. including a few hundred cast rounds, the 6 cavity mold + handles, and some loaded ammo for 300$. All new that comes out to ~500$ cdn. I was with him in the store when he bought this 1911 and it only has under 500 rnds through it.

Go for it. 1911s are great. And yes, I absolutely intend to get a Mk 23 as a curio when the funds exist. But it's about as practical as a monster truck. And twice as big :)

tis a good thing derman isnt here anymore. Was looking at a mil auction of some 200 guns including some g41's and g43's ( wayyyyy to rich for my blood at ~6k each). spotted two enfield revolvers ( direct rip of the webley but made by enfield) in .38s&w for cheap. bought both. sadly someone came and snapped up the single action one before i could, so both are double actions.
