This was another well done episode, and the results were quite remarkable.

For Ivan, he had:

Some sort of Russian matchlock long arm, using a bardiche as a rest (I really think that was thought of on the spot)*
A hungarian cavalry sabre*
a bardiche (basically a large pole axe)
chainmail with small plates on the front and back

For Cortez, he had:
an older (read: one of the first) Arquebus with monopod
Spanish designed straight sword, double edged
a halberd*
plate armour with steel helmet*

(* indicates edge)

I was simply astounded by the results. Both matchlock longarms were capable of taking out two targets with one shot, but the russian matchlock had some sort of powder reservoir that cut reload time in half. The sabre was more impressive than the spanish sword (although the straight sword was able to cut a pick clean in half, while the sabre was not). The bardiche lost a lot of points because of its weight, taking so much energy to wield - also, it was unable to unmount a torso on a horse. The halberd was able to deal more damage faster, with more precise strikes, and was excellent in unmounting the target. I was surprised that they actually brought armour into consideration. Although neither was bullet proof, the spanish armor provided great protection against the bardiche and the sabre, which ultimately led to a victory for Cortez.

The 'x factors' again played a huge role in this matchup. Both men were considered crazy and loony, but Ivan was too crazy (drinking down a mercury elixir for his back pain?) and it was decided that Ivan's was too crazy while Cortez was just crazy enough.

Definitely a decent episode.

I can't wait for the next two episodes. This next week, Crazy Horse vs. Pancho Villa (my ethnicity automatically makes me support Villa). I haven't looked into what they're looking at in the episode, but I suspect it may be one of those "'MERKUH FUCK YEA, LOL MEXICANS SUUUUCK" sort of episodes.

I'm not going to ruin it for anyone who hasn't been to the Wiki page, but the season finale ought to be quite the matchup :D

Hehe sounds awesome!
I'll have to show the episode to my Russian parents who will laugh like hell.

I'm not holding out much hope for Pancho Villa because something tells me that Crazy Horse might win in the end but I nevertheless can't wait for next week's episode!
