Handgun or rifle? If rifle (which I would recommend), Ruger 10/22 is it, all the way. You can add so many different chassis systems to it:

http://troyind.com/troy-weapon-upgrades ... s-upgrades

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2011 ... -a-hk-g36/

http://akpartskits.com/cart/index.php?m ... cts_id=534

It'll be like your very own .22 caliber WarStudio :)

If a pistol, go with a Ruger Mark II or III (I forget which is traditionally considered superior). They're the gold standard for reliable, accurate 22 handguns.

Other options:

The GSG series of 22 clones, such as the MP5, 1911, and AK, imported by ATI:

http://www.americantactical.us/

Or a personal favorite of mine, the Walther P22:

http://www.jetguns.com/images/D5/13/13119.jpg

Great casual plinker. Quality is often debated online, so it's definitely more of a starter/learner gun. But with the laser, it's pretty badass!

EDIT - Doh, you clearly stated "22 rifle" in the subject. My bad :). Nonetheless, suggestions above are still worthwhile!

Thanks for the info, asi! The troy chasis looks very nice. I am new to guns (and shooting in general) so this is going to be a challenge. :)

Also, that lady on the ATI site is very pretty :o

She's only available in concealed-carry states :)

In all honesty, as you're now beginning the journey, far and away the best place to start is over at ar15.com. They have plenty of subforums (22s, etc.) that will provide a wealth of information, pictures on which to model your future baby, etc. etc. It's where I (and many others) started.

They're also very friendly and accommodating of noobish questions.

By the way, your decision to go 22 is a very wise one. You'll be able to get a quality firearm within your budget, use the caliber most preferred by real (yep, real) snipers to train, and you'll save thousands of dollars in ammo. Even high grade 22 ammo (like CCI Mini Mag) is like $7 for a box of 50.

Oh and case you think I'm kidding about the whole "real snipers" thing, take a look at this:

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthr ... ost1480202

The site is a community of many current and former Marine, Army, and Law Enforcement snipers, along with the occasional SEAL and other spec ops guy (not to mention hordes of non-military but top ranking tactical competition shooters). These guys buy 22 rifles and spec them out *identically* to their main rigs, complete with $3K+ glass on top. I'm not kidding. It enables them to train like the real thing for much less cost and at much shorter distances. They're really into this.

Another vote for the Ruger 10/22.

Great rifle. Almost unlimited addons and accessories (comparable to the AR15, lol).

And yes, ammo is dumb cheap. A bulk box of >500 is around $20 in most states.

You really cant go wrong with a Ruger 10/22. TAPCO makes nifty adjustable stock and pistol grip furniture for em if you want that evil black rifle look :)

Well, I actually called the local policed department a few backs and they said, that the city ordinance says that it's illegal to own anything that looks like a guns. So, I guess that means, paintball, airsoft, pellet gun, etc. Heck, even the cheap CO2 gun I had wasn't allowed/. So, I dont think Ill be getting anything like this anytime soon...

Dude what.

There's no way guns are straight up banned anywhere in the US.

Don't buy a pellet or airsoft gun.

Just get a Ruger 10/22. I know for a fact they sell Cali-legal mags, and the standard stock is completely compliant with their "assault rifle" bs.

Can't go wrong with a classic 10/22! If you are on a bit more of a budget you could always check out the Marlin 795. While I personally have had very little experience with it, I've heard nothing but good things. Last I checked they were between around $110 to $140 depending where you looked. It just doesn't have the following or the upgrades that a 10/22 has but at least it has last round hold open!

Yep, I couldnt believe it. I think it's just the city. They are allowed everywhere else in california. Its just this place has super dumb gun laws. If anyone thinks this is crazy, dont take my word for it.. well here's the number (650) 329-2406.

It may very well be that they've banned 'look-alike' guns, as you've said, pellet guns, paintball guns, etc... There's some draconian reasoning to that, but it's been done other places.

However, I find it very unlikely that they've preempted the Bill of Rights and outright banned ALL firearms.

Did some digging and apparently it is actually illegal to own any sort of gun in palo alto.

I probably wouldn't have carried before, but alliance has really sort of gotten me interested in shooting. Hence, that bb gun that I bought. Man, that thing was a joy to use. Probably put like 10,000 bbs through it. Sigh

That link is broken.

There's no city in the US that outright bans any form of firearm. Even the strictest cities like Chicago and New York - you can own long arms and pistols, but you can't carry concealed or openly. In these cities shooting ranges are impossible to find and beyond expensive.

I did some googling and nothing says that you can't own longarms and pistols. There may be restrictions on rifle configuration or carry, but there's no way you can't get yourself a Mosin Nagant, a Ruger 10/22, or a 1911.

*EDIT*

Got to the page.

It does say firearms and anything that makes projectiles move is prohibited.

However, there's a section directly underneath the first one called "Exceptions"

Quote:
(a) The provisions of Section 9.08.010 as to the use of any of the firearms mentioned therein shall not apply to any of the following cases:

(1) To police, peace officers or persons in military service in the discharge of their duties and using reasonable care;

(2) To persons using firearms in necessary self-defense;

(3) To the possession of such firearms for keeping at the place of residence or business of the person otherwise in lawful possession thereof, or while traveling to or from a legal firing, shooting or target range or hunting ground;

(4) To the discharging or firing of such firearms or causing them to be discharged or fired at a legal firing, shooting or target range or hunting ground;

(5) To the discharging or firing of fireworks after permit therefor has been issued by the fire chief;

(6) To the use of a gun firing .22 caliber shot-cartridge only, upon a written permit applied for and granted by the chief of police to protect life or property against animals, birds or rodents;

(7) To the discharging or firing of a pistol incapable of projecting any bullet or missile (a) for the sole purpose of starting an organized athletic event, by an official who has charge of the competitors at the start of the athletic event; or (b) for use as a theater prop in a bona fide theatrical production.

Seems perfectly legal own and operate firearms to me.

They don't prohibit possession on private property (i.e. your house, a range, a gun store), but it seems that the ban only applies to public/government areas.

OK, well that's good. I mean, I was firing off a bb gun for a few hours a day in my backyard and no one seemed to mind. :)

Just save up and buy the ruger, and then after you've plugged a few paper targets save up again and buy something with a bit more power. The Mosin Nagants are pretty cheap..actually less than a .22, but it has the round very close to the size of a 30-06.
