I recently suggested something along these lines but the honorable mr. spiffinz assured me that the particular thread was only for firearms.. so i'll start a new one! Operation flashpoint is said to have the largest explosions in a game, but I think we can show them how it's done! :)

How cool would it be to have something like the 2000 JDAM?

MOAB?

Epic pyrotechnics anyone?

We've seen the usual exploding barrels in shooters since before we can remember, but what about being able to blow up huge propane or gas tanks?

Father of All Bombs or bust.

It would be cool to be able to call in A-10 or Su25 with smoke, flares or lazers to take out large, fortified positions.

I think off-map artillery would be cool, if used sparingly. Missile arty too, not just big guns.

One way that could be done right would be if, regardless of server setting, called in artillery always did team damage. That would allow us to simultaneously fix the significantly shrunken fire effects of artillery (plane drops bomb, blows up a 10 square meter patch :) ) and prevent abuse and spamming. You wanna blow up half the map? Better make damn sure neither you nor anyone near you is in it!

Agreed. Most games under-represent the kill radius of artillery. And make it kill both sides equally, as it should.

Has any FPS done called in strafing runs? The A10 Thunderbolt's 30mm cannon could be modeled to dramatic effect.

Oh jesus that'd be awesome. As I'm sure many on here know, they sure as heck *show* it in BFBC2 and allow you to run through the splash, but nothing ever actually happens as it's all just scripted and for effect :\

Speaking of blowing things up, I'de love to see some great pyrotechics. This is a small detail granted, but it's tricky in my opinion. The look of the fireball is what really sells the whole thing imo. Most games fall short in this.

Many games also neglect to show the shrapnel that is ejected from the blast (makes for a really nice visual touch.)

Usually because it moves to fast to see....all you see is the blast, debris, and smoke.....

More great examples of how fireballs in games should look...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcmmLvAYqkI

Some visible shrapnel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0Ao106jxxU

I think if simulated, shrapnel could make explosions seem much more threatening. Usually in games, you don't have to worry as long as you are out of the " blast zone."

You fail to understand that shrapnel isn't debris from where explosion was ie the car, but it's pieces of the grenade or bomb...not the car itself. While those pieces could hurt you shrapnel moves at a much faster speed because it's Tue casing around the explosive like a grenade.

My mistake.. Well okay, so I guess I should rephrase. What I wanted to see were those pieces of the car (or anything else that blows up) pose a physical danger to the player..

It's all good everyone makes mistakes lol. But basically you want to see explosions to have the debris cause damage as well? I can actually see that being a rather neat idea. Random cars or bigger objects exploding and sending huge chunks of metal or even a tire everywhere which could cause some good "splash" damage.

Yeah, I think it would keep people on their toes. They wouldn't just be able to call it quits. They would have to dodge threats. It would give you that "oh shit, that was close!" feeling.
