Hey guys. So we've been having a blast seeing all the feedback, ideas, dialog, and passion that are cropping up again on the forums. We've said it countless times and we'll say it again- you guys are what are going to make this game and we're honored to be working with you on it.

But enough of the fluff and down to business :). A good part of all this involved dialog has been centered on the single player aspects of the game, especially threads on potential scenarios, etc. This prompted us to make a posting in order to more productively shape your conversation (and if you've really read carefully between the lines on here, you might have already been able to pick up on this news)...

The initial reboot of Alliance is going to be multiplayer only.

The universe itself will still be very much informed by the single player story, settings, and events, but we're saving the actual campaign for a later date. This is part of our "numerous new ways to get Alliance out to you" plan that we discuss in our relaunch announcement. Focusing on the very first idea behind Alliance (multiplayer) and polishing it to a brilliant sheen is now the focus of our development effort. The single player aspect is still a massive undertaking which hasn't changed much in its requirements, so we've decided to defer it and get something out to you that we can easily and directly distribute and deliver as we had intended.

Need for concern? Not at all. The story is still in the plans and we're still very much in love with that side of the project. We've just decided to focus on the part we could do without getting into the same trap as before of requiring massive capital from outside parties, waiting years to release, etc. etc.

And you'll still see hints and story points crop up in the multiplayer mode to entice the keen player, but who cares, you'll probably be too busy blasting each other away to notice all our delicate and subtle work anyway :).

We were going to sit on this announcement a bit longer, but with all the impassioned conversation on here, we thought we should save you all your breath for the real stuff.

So that's it! Gear up for some hard core fragging, just know that you won't be shattering any AI players' egos for a bit longer :).

Best,
Asi and Eric

Let me be the first to say that this is fantastic news. It seems that most FPS's now have a shoddily made single player, often times not worth playing through, making only the multiplayer worth playing.

As you said, it's definitely worth it to release the multiplayer first, as not only will it give us a fix while we wait for the singleplayer, but you will gain much more attention and capital from publishers - showing them that you guys mean business.

Pip pip, huzzah!

DerMann, I just clicked on this thread, with breath half-held, after seeing there was a response.

You guys and this community are fantastic. The fact that you not only get it but responded in such a positive way really helps drive us forward.

Thanks man and cheerio!

I would definitely rather see it this way than having to rush to get both out and have the quality suffer.

I agree 100%. Look at all the big games out right now. Look at how much they focus on multiplayer(like Dermann said). The fact that you're releasing the mp first is amazing news! I love to frag kids and I have been waiting so long to do this in Alliance so this is great news. I know the multiplayer will be amazing just looking at how much all of you have been working so hard (the teaser video really shows that). This will be great :)!!!

You all rock!

Even though it was not an easy decision, we definitely felt that it was the correct one. None-the-less, it's extremely gratifying to see such supportive responses.

Thanks guys!

This was a great decision on the part of the Alliance dev team.

Multiplayer is such a critical part of games these days I think its smart to start polishing and fine tuning it as early as possible. I foresee the MP being impeccable by the time the single player content comes out :)

This is great you guys the community will have so much room to grow and no doubt flourish.
I cant wait!

Great news! I can't wait to to see dive into things! Will each be sold separately?

BTW, I might be getting a job so I may yet be able to send some money!

Thanks! We can't wait either! :)

One thing I can't wait to find out, is how many of you will be able to kick our ass online. As developers, you're told many, many times that your players will end up being MUCH better than you (except for maybe the occasional grim-reaper QA Tester).

We hope to at least make it a tough challenge. I smell an achievement or two... ;)

Thanks man.

As to your question, I'd say probably, but it really is too early to tell. We're purposely not worrying too much about single-player right now and just focusing on working out all the details of multi-player to make it as spectacular as can be.

Awesome man, that would rock! :)

For an "small" dev studio I agree completely with going PvP MP first. The resources to get a PvP MP only game out the door is much more manageable than a full blown SP and MP. SP requires alot of scripting, art, and AI programming. You are not the only ones to have this idea ,www.blackfootstudios.com, which is another game I am following very very closely. I am actually quite glad you guys are choosing this route. Thanks for the update.

You are completely right. Single-player could end up taking around 80-90% of your resources, with most of that going into art, scripting, & AI. Voice acting, mocap, & animation for gameplay and cutscenes would probably follow. Overall, a lot of extra work is needed for single-player, while multi-player only needs the addition of good networking and dedicated servers. Not trivial, but at least it's more contained and better understood domain.

Will all the weapons be featured in mp? Im kind of imaging several versions, where each one has progressively more weapons. I think i might be psychic.

Too early to say. The details are still being worked out.

Honestly put out a beta (i.e. demo) with 5 or 6 weapons from each category. Work out the bugs from the beta. Release the "game" with maybe a few more in each category, then add to the weapons as time goes on as free "DLC". :)

What price point are you guys looking at?

I wish you guys all the best!
I've been waiting for this game since it was announced and I'll give you guys as much time as you need to finish making it! You have the support of all your fans!

Just remember, once you release the multiplayer portion of the game, enjoy the first day as much as possible since after 24 hours, everyone will know all the mechanics and the camping spots on the map. :P (coming from an unrepentant camper  )

It has been mentioned that you don't want to release videos of work in progress stuff because people are often judge it prematurely. But how about some exclusive videos for us die hard fans? Like something to show all of what has happened since 2006. :)

Yeah that one's weird. We've put some pretty good safeguards in place. I'm sure AllianceEric (ugh, we're referring to ourselves now with our forum names- that strange? :) ) will clean it up and beef up security shortly.

Back when you guys shut down for a while and spam INFESTED this forum, I was working on the Darkest hour project and it hit that forum as well. I was removing about 100 accounts a day that were registered accounts, never posted anything, but had links to viagra/porn/etc on their user profile page...

Anyways, as Athenian was saying *if* weapon development becomes the holdup later on it would probably be ok to leave lots of firearms for post release DLC. Get the community in on voting up which guns come next or so and ship out guns on a regular basis... ( Nothing like more content to keep people playing )
