Sorry if this is a n00b question, but which is a better gun? I believe I have heard in the past that the thompson is more powerful.

I'd say the Thompson. Although I'm probably a bit biased because I haven't fired an MP40 yet.

I will say that a Thompson kicks and climbs less than a full auto M16.

From what Ive heard, the MP-40 was easier to control due to its slightly slower rate of fire, and 9mm chambering. So it was more accurate in some cases.

Whereas the Thompson was more suited for very close-quarters.

Since the Thompson is so big and heavy, it almost nulls out the recoil to something managable.

I will always like the Thompson. I will say, however, that it is very, very, very long for an SMG and basically defeats the purpose of having an SMG (small compact weapons for CQB type stuff).

32 inches for the M1a1 compared to about 25 inches with the MP40 with the stock folded and about 33 inches with the stock extended.

Yeah, the PPSh-41 is my favorite of the 3 as well.

I've shot a MP40 on full auto before, but not a Thompson yet, so I can't directly compare the two (yet...). The MP40 was reasonably controllable and was definitely fun to shoot.

thompson fires a .45 bullet which will definately kill you if you get hit anywhere on the torso a few times, however there are many stories of soldiers being hit with multiple 9mm rounds and surviving, the 9mm just isnt big enough to pose that serious threat. combined with the fact that the 1928a1 thompson submachinegun had a 50 or 100 round magazine ( ) im not sure of the effective range of the mp40 however i know the effective range of the tompson is said to be about 100 - 130 ish meters.

the impressive thing about the ppsh is that it has an effective range of 200 meters. thanks to its minature rifle round

another hollywood gun bullshit, i seriously doubt you can cut somone in half with a tompson submachinegun. that was something the burp gun was said to do, which fired bigger faster flying bullets at 1200 rpm, and had a belt feed of 250 of those bullets, enter mg42.

i think this is a job for the mythbusters lol

but really i'd say it could with it's fire rate and at close range if you were lucky enough to hit all the shots inthe right place could happen

but once again no way to prove anything  i still like the idea

Ah, yea good show. I am sure we'd be able to get more evidence if we got them to try it out. Should all try to submit that 'myth' in...

with 30 bullets i doubt your gonna cut somone in half, its also very hard to maintaing an aim at a certain area, so if you wanted to cut somone in half it would have to be point blank with a 1928a1 with a 100 round magazine..

You can cut anyone in half with any weapon. Depends on how many rounds and time your willing to spend...

No. You can not cut someone in half with 30 rounds SMG.
You need to stop focusing on the gun itself. Two 9mm round SMG's cannot have a huge difference in power because its the 9mm round itself that determines.

80% of the SMG's beeing used that exist in the military are there for one purpose... Self defence. an SMG has an effective range of about 50-100 meters. And you can burn upp your facts from a book or whatever on them beeing effective on 300meters and thats because its nonsense.

Smg's as I know them are carried by certain specialforces members and the soldiers with non attack duties.. Artillery crewmen and such. Who must defend themselves if someone attacks their position. Then they dont wanna carry M240's and FN FNC's wich are heavy and clumpsy.
