well compared to the other assault rifle rounds, it leaves a fairly cleaner hole, little fragmentation and a straight path through.

No pistol caliber will ever match rifle rounds. Pistols are pistols, and rifles are rifles.

However, consider this: the .357 Magnum is generally loaded with a bullet diameter of 9.09mm. Now, look at the photograph - the bullet expanded to 18mm. That's damn near TWICE THE SIZE in expansion, that's remarkable!

PS I'm really sorry but for some reason I could not resist continue with the serious conversation

Really? Because if I could manufacture ammunition in any caliber that got that kind of expansion, I'd be a very wealthy man.

Loaded with Barnes X bullets, it will probably do better.

My mistake, I misunderstood you.

I was being a little obtuse. What you said was correct, of course. 5.56mm will work on critters as large as a deer(where legal) with the correct load.

Yep. Rifles are superior to pistols in almost every way, except size.

If I could make a gun, I'd just make a gun that fired globs of mercury. I'm pretty sure no one would be happy with the human or ballistic results, but hey, it'd work and it'd be somewhat cheaper than making bullets. Just load tubes of mercury into your gun et voila, insta-rape.

No if we mass produce it.

It doesn't matter if you mass produce it or not, the element mercury itself is still expensive.

That's also the reason the cost of ammunition skyrocketed in the last year. The price of lead, copper, and to a smaller point, brass went up in price. You still have to pay money for the raw materials.

^^^ Thats FMJ

Both are different bullet types, the military only allows FMJ, so post a pic of 5.56 in FMJ for a true comparison. :D

both ARE fmj, it says right there FMC full metal case.

this is why 5.56 is a great military round, it fragments at common velocity without needing a SP or HP, meanwhile larger rounds are less likely to fragment.

also someone mentioned the scale is off which is true, but the fact remains that the 5.56 when properl;y fragmented causes similar or more damage than larger rounds and you can carry 3 times as much of it.

plus its such a versatile round, not only for military but for civilian use iot can fill many roles.

oh and sorry about the long response time, was away for a week.

To throw the thread back on topic. I find the Bushmaster Varminter to be one of the sexiest AR15 based rifles on the planet. The smooth lines, the fluted barrel, the perforated front hand-guard... Ummmm, you get the idea. :)

Guilty; I make a mint off of them. M14 sanding and varnishing prose is especially popular... ;)

Au contraire! It is just another, black, 5.56 NATO, STANAG fed, bullpup rifle.

It's not special.

Except that this bullpup is ambidextrous-friendly straight out of the box... unlike 99.9% of bullpups.
